The Road Haulage Association (RHA) estimates there is a current shortage of around 100,000 HGV drivers, affecting all industries beyond the well publicised problems for the food retail sector. Empty shelves are starting to appear for all types of wholesaler as well as the supermarkets.
The shortage of HGV is due to a mix of longer term factors and has become particularly acute in recent months.
The fundamental problem is that more drivers are leaving the industry due to retirement than are being recruited, where the terms and conditions of working are considered less attractive than in other occupations. Combine this long term issue with the suspension of driver testing during 2020 due to the pandemic, European nationals returning home post-Brexit (partly in response IR35 tax changes), and more recently absences caused by summer holidays and the so-called 'pingdemic', then it is clear to see why this longer term issued has suddenly come to the fore.
Our major suppliers have all reported delivery problems due to driver shortages to one degree or another. In response most have extended delivery lead times. In some instances this has been by weeks rather than days.
We recognise the difficulties that any stock shortages which may result form this problem, will cause for our customers.
Accordingly, where possible we have taken action to increase stockholdings on key products. Where this has not been possible, we will offer appropriate substitute products, which will help bridge the gap until your usual product is available. Your account handler will advise you as necessary.
We believe that any stock shortages will be a temporary problem, during the time our stock levels adjust and are fully aligned with new supplier delivery schedules.
